First Parish is one of 50 UU churches in the Boston area that supports the UU Urban Ministry in Roxbury both financially and with volunteer time. The UUUM supports survivors of domestic violence, works to close the achievement gap for urban youth through academic and life skills coaching, and supports families in the Roxbury area as they strive to build a better future. During May, First Parishioners are participating in two upcoming events with the UUUM:

Thursday May 2: Roxbury UUUM Program Spotlight and Meeting House Tour. Park your car by 4pm at First Parish in Wayland and ride with us to First Church in Roxbury to hear from the Unitarian Universalist Urban Ministry team and program participants from 5-7 p.m. Food and refreshments will be served. We’ll tour their historic 1804 Meeting House – a larger-scale version of our Wayland structure – and receive a presentation about their work and programs.

Thursday May 16: A May Morning in the UUUM Peace Garden Do you have a green thumb or just want to spend a May morning helping us get the Peace Garden on the UU Urban Ministry campus ready for the summer? On Thursday, May 16th from 10am-12pm, the UUUM offers a volunteer opportunity to help plant new bushes and flowers and do some weeding. Please let us know if you are interested. We can arrange carpools.
