For the past three years, First Parish in Wayland has hosted Sewing Seeds for Hope, along with several other nonprofits, at our Holiday Pop-Up Sale. These nonprofits retain all of their earnings from their sales.
Sewing Seeds for Hope is a volunteer-run nonprofit helping Afghan women achieve self-sufficiency. As the organization’s tagline states, it is “empowering Afghan women, one stitch at a time.” These women share a strong desire to see their families, especially their children, succeed in their new homeland.
When the U.S. withdrew from Afghanistan in 2021, a number of families who had supported the U.S. during the war were evacuated. Many were legally resettled in New England and began the difficult process of rebuilding their lives in a new and unfamiliar country.
In addition to learning a new language and culture, the women are developing strong business and leadership skills by using their talents to create and sell a variety of beautiful handmade products, including pillows, cosmetic bags, gift bags, aprons, and more.
First Parish recently received a lovely thank you from the organization. The letter notes that the women feel immense pride in their contributions to their families’ success. Their earnings have been vital in covering the high cost of heating and electricity, medical expenses, clothing for their children, and other daily needs. One woman’s English has progressed to the point that she now serves as a translator for other members of her community. Another woman says she is grateful to all who have helped her and is happy that her sewing benefits those who use her products. Another member of the group is learning embroidery, to expand her skills.
The letter closes: “Thank you, from all of us at Sewing Seeds for Hope, for caring for these families. You truly have made a difference!”
