Whether we affirm it in our Principles or share it in our Values, interdependence is a tenet of our Unitarian Universalist faith. We recognize that everything is connected: human life to non-human life and each of us to the other. We lift up the mutuality in all relationships and try to settle humbly in our place on the web of existence.
But interdependence is out of fashion in 2025. People seeking or yielding power want the independence to do so. Others find themselves powerless and dependent in the margins.
What’s so hard about interdependence and why is it vital now? Let’s make a case.
Rev. Rebecca Sheble-Hall is a community minister and former Executive Director of Chaplains on the Way, which was at the time, an outdoor chaplaincy to the community of people experiencing homelessness in Waltham. She also served First Parish in Waltham for 8 years in a variety of roles. Currently, Becky enjoys the role of itinerate preacher and being “Amma” to her grandson Leo.
