Is the 7th UU Principle: “The respect for the interdependent web of all existence for which we are a part” a call for social/political action, or does it express a psychological/spiritual longing? Do humans have a natural and necessary need for nature? “Nature theologians” have been debating this question for thousands of years. We will read and discuss passages from Genesis, Thomas Aquinas, Jonathan Edwards, leading up to and focusing on E. O. Wilson’s later works that explore the concept of “Biophilia,” the innate human affinity for the natural world.
